ETTRICK, VA – The Virginia State University women's basketball team stretched their winning-streak to two games following an 83-43 victory against a depleted Regent team with only six players suited up because of injury Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans had four players finish in double digits as
Sommer Blakemore finished with a game-high 17 points on 8-15 shooting while
Valerie Samuel ended with 12 points while leading her team in rebounds (8) and assists (5). The twins, Bailee and
Bianca White, scored an identical 15 points. For
Bailee White, this was the first game of the season she scored in double digits. The Trojans set a new season-high from the free throw line on the season going 91%. VSU also set a new season-high with 38 points off turnovers while forcing 32 on the afternoon.
How It Happened
- The Trojans came out on fire going 5-5 to start the game, which gave them their best start of the season. The perfect start gave VSU an 11-0 lead prior to an RU timeout three minutes into the game.
- The closest the Royals could cut their deficit to was nine points as the Trojans controlled the first quarter 26-9. Samuel and Bailee White combined for 15 points.
- A 14-4 run helped the Trojans extend their lead to 28 points heading into the half with the score at 47-19.
- Bailee White scored 11 points while going 50% from the field while Sommer Blakemore had nine points with a game-high four steals. Valerie Samuel and Bianca White added eight apiece at the end of the half as Samuel also led the game with six rebounds heading into the halftime break. The Trojans had their most efficient half of the year shooting 56% from the field. VSU forced 18 turnovers in the first half while holding the Royals to 32% from the field.
- Halfway through the third quarter, the Trojans were able increase their lead to 51-19 thanks to mid-range jumpers from Samuel and Bianca White.
- The Royals would find success throughout the remainder of the third quarter but the Trojans would take a 62-29 lead into the final quarter of play.
- The Trojans started the fourth quarter with 12 unanswered points to bring the score to 74-29 with 4:54 left in the game.
- VSU was able to hold on to their 40-point lead to beat the Royals 83-43.
