The Trojans drop third-straight to PJU 74-63

JOHNTOWN, PA. – The Virginia State University men's basketball has dropped their third-straight road game Sunday afternoon 74-63 to Pitt-Johnstown University.
 
Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald led the team in scoring yet again with 10 points on 4-10 shooting along with three rebounds. Antwan Miles and Terrence Hunter-Whitfield finished with eight while Hunter-Whitfield had a team-high 10 rebounds and Miles had a team-high four assists. Daryl Mackey and Ethan Wilson were key contributors off the bench. Mackey and Wilson ended with eight each while going 2-of-3 from three-point range. The VSU bench shined again this season outscoring the Mountain Cats 31-7. The Trojans were able to make 50% of their shots from the field in the first half.
 
How It Happened
  • Through the first five minutes, Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald had five of the first nine points of the game for the Trojans as they held a slim 9-8 lead.
.
  • The next five minutes saw two lead changes and three ties as the Trojans were able to hold their lead 22-19 with 10:13 left in the first half.
 
  • The two would continue to battle it out as the first half saw yet another tie ball game at 27-27 with 4:42 left to go.   


 
  • To close the half, PJU took their first lead of the game 37-35 headed into the locker room.

 
  • The Trojans shot 50% from the field and 38% from beyond the arc in the first half but missed all three of their free throw attempts.
 
  • To start the second half, the Mountain Cats went on a crucial 9-4 run to extend their lead to 48-39 with 15:00 left in the game.
 
  • PJU was able to keep the Trojans at arm's length through the second half with the score at 64-54 with 4:44 left in the game.
 
  • The Mountain Cats were able to maintain their double-digit lead through the entirety of the second half taking the win 74-63.
