Trojans earn first regular season win in style, 101-73

ETTRICK, V.A. – Virginia State men's basketball notched their first win of the 2021-22 against Mansfield University late Friday night.
 
Jonathan Norfleet had a game-high 15 points, as he was one of five Trojans to finish in double figures. Dajour Rucker (14), Antwan Miles (10), Terrence – Hunter Whitfield (10) and James Love, III (10) were the point leaders. Rucker led the game with nine boards while Norfleet ended with four assists. Darryl Mackey dropped a game-high five dimes in the afternoon match up. 
 
The three-pointers were falling for the Trojans as they ended with a season-high 52%. The Trojans dominated the glass outrebounding MU 53-30 while also accounting for 19 second chance points. The home team held Mansfield to a just two free throw attempts in the first half while also holding MU to a 37% shot percentage.
 
How It Happened
 

The start of the first half saw only three lead changes of the game making the score 9-8 in favor of the Trojans with 16:25 left in the first half. 
 
Halfway through the first half, the Trojans went on a 12-4 run to push their lead out to 10 at 22-12.
 
The Trojans took the lead into the break 50-27.
 
Heading into the break, James Love, III (10) and Antwan Miles (7) combined for 17 points. Francis Fitzgerald and Jonathan Norfleet had six each at the half as well.
 
The Trojans shot at a 58% clip from the field at the half while also knocking down 7-of-12 threes.
 
To open the second half, the Trojans broke the game open behind a 12-0 run to extend the lead out to 68-40.  
Jonathan Norfleet scored nine points on 3-of-5 shooting in the second half while Dajour Rucker scored 10 on 4-of-5 shooting.

The Trojans had five individuals in double figures.
 
The Trojans took an abundance of high percentage shots with a 54.2% shooting percentage in the game.
 
VSU hit 52% of their shots from beyond the arc in the weekend matchup.
 
All but one Trojan scored in the late evening matchup yet the only Trojan that did not score brought down five rebounds in the contest.
 
The Trojans had six players that shot over 60% from three-point range
 
The squad scored 55 off the bench against the PSAC opponent.
