ETTRICK, VA (October 16, 2021)- The Virginia State University volleyball team opened day 1 of the CIAA roundup with a 3-set sweep against the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University. The Trojans are playing host to all of the CIAA member institutions for the 2-day CIAA Volleyball Roundup.
Set 1
Despite JCSU securing the first point of the set off of a Trojans error, VSU gained control with a 5-0 run. The Trojans stayed consistent on the court, holding strong to their lead. The Golden Bulls seemed to close the scoring gap in the final plays of the set, but the Trojans pulled away with a 25-20 set 1 win.
Set 2
VSU and JCSU went point for point in the opening set 2 plays. An error by the Golden Bulls, gave the Trojans a 7-6 lead and the momentum to control the court in a very close set. Despite the score being tied, 18-18, VSU did not give up hope, going on a 7-0 run for a 25-18 set 2 victory.
Set 3
The final set of the matchup undoubtedly belonged to the Trojans, as they held the Golden Bulls to only 15 points. Mimicking the second set, VSU stayed consistent to go on a 5-0 run to take the set, 25-15, and the overall win.
Leaders
VSU led in all categories in their matchup against JCSU, to include dominating in blocks, 2-0.
Ambria McBride led the charge for the Trojans with 11 kills and 14 digs, while
Kennedy Hoge secured 3 aces.
Zaria Irons and
Jodorrian Taylor were evenly matched with 2 blocks each, in addition to
Makenzy Johnson stepping in with 22 assists.

Next Up
The Trojans are set to take on the Panthers of Claflin University and the Rams of Winston-Salem State University at 9am and 3pm respectively for day 2 (Oct. 17) of the CIAA Volleyball Roundup. The roundup is hosted by the VSU Trojans at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
