Trojans Earn First Homerun of the Season During UVA-Wise Matchup

VSU Falls On Day 1 of Weekend Double-Header Series

GAME 1   GAME 2

ETTRICK, VA (February 8, 2020)- The Virginia State University baseball team earned their first homerun of the 2020 season during day 1 of the Trojans weekend series against the Cavalier of UVA-Wise. Although Keyon Smith secured 2 RBIs in game 1 with his home run, the Trojans fell short in with a score of 3-2 and could not recover in game 2 with a 10-1 loss.

The Trojans are currently 1-4 on the season.

Game 1

Starting the game off with a scoreless 1st inning, UVA-Wise gained a run at the top of the 2nd inning to take the lead. The scoreless 3rd and 4th inning followed by the visitors gaining an additional run, seemed as if hope was lost for the Trojans. At the bottom of the 6th inning with 1 out and Kevin Russel on first base, the Trojans needed a game changer. Keyon Smith made that change with a homerun to right field, earning him 2 RBI's and tying the game 2-all.  That marked VSU's first homerun of the season.

The Cavaliers answered back with a run at the top of the 7th inning to take a 3-2 lead. The Trojans were not able to power back, falling short in game 1.

Jarren Norman took the loss for the Trojans after pitching the initial 6 innings.

Game 2

The second game of the day was a tough battle, as the Trojans suffered a 10-1 loss.

VSU did not advance home until the 4th inning with Kevin Russell securing a run giving Joshua Tayman an RBI.

UVA-Wise scored in every inning except the 4th and 5th.

Andrew Riddick took the game loss for the Trojans after pitching the initial 2 innings of the matchup.
