Trojans Split Day 2 of UVA-Wise Weekend Series With Extended Inning Victory

ETTRICK, VA (February 9, 2020)- The Virginia State University baseball team rallied back after 9 innings in game 2 against UVA-Wise to take a 9-8 victory. The Trojans fell to the Cavaliers, 8-4, in game 1 before their extended inning game 2 win.
The Trojans are currently 2-5 on the season.

Game 1
There was no hesitation in getting the game started, with the visiting Cavaliers gained 5 runs in the 1st inning. The Trojans worked to answer back at the bottom of the inning brining Carl Granderson and Aaron Harris in, giving Kevin Russell and Joshua Tayman an RBI.
UVA-Wise came back at the top of 2nd inning with 2 additional runs, but VSU also secured a run with Jordan McKenzie advancing home, giving Keyon Smith an RBI. After 2 innings, the Trojans trailed 7-3.
Despite a scoreless 3rd, 5th and 7th innings, home plate saw action by UVA-Wise at the tops of the 4th and by the Trojans at the bottom of the 6th. McKenzie secured his 2nd run of the day, to give Cecil Henderson an RBI.
Although VSU attempted to power back, it was not enough causing an 8-4 loss.
Bryce Haynes took the loss for the Trojans after pitching the initial 3 innings.
 
Game 2
The start of game 2 put the Trojans in an early 2-0 deficit after 2 complete innings. UVA-Wise gained a run at the top of the 3rd inning, but Delmarcus Talley put the Trojans on the board, giving Carl Granderson an RBI. Darius Holman got in on the scoring action at the bottom of the 4th inning, giving Granderson another RBI. The Trojans trailed, 3-2.
VSU went on a scoring drought as the Cavalier were up 7-2 going into the bottom of the 7th inning,
The game quickly turned around in favor of the Trojans with Aaron Harris and Kevin Russell advancing home to give Joshua Tayman 2 RBIs. Holeman also gained 2 RBIs with the advancement of Keyon Smith and Tayman. Rallying to tie the game 7-all, Tavion Dawson scored, giving Talley an RBI.
Moving the matchup into 8 innings, the Cavaliers scored to take an 8-7 lead, but it was short lived. Pinch runner Joshua Miniya retied the game, 8-all, giving Talley another RBI.
The Trojans momentum allowed them to hold UVA-Wise at the top of the 9th inning. Only needing a single run to take the victory, VSU stayed focused. With 2 outs on the board and a runner at 1st and 3rd, Joshua Heigh stepped up and smacked a single to right field! The hit gave Aaron Harris the opportunity to advance home, giving Heigh an RBI and the Trojans a 9-8 victory.
Jeremiah Hardy stayed consistent on the mound, pitch the entire game to earn him the win.
 
 
Up Next
The VSU baseball team will host Lincoln University (PA) and Shepherd University on February 15-16 at the Whaley Colbert Baseball Field. The first pitch of the VSU vs. LUPA is set for 11am, followed by the VSU vs. SU contest at 2pm.
