Women’s Basketball Breaks Losing Streak With, 67-62, Win Over Claflin

ORANGEBURG, SC (February 5, 2020) - The VSU Trojans women's basketball team broke their losing streak with a 67-62 non-conference road win over the Panthers of Claflin University.
The victory moves the Trojans to a 9-15 overall record, 4-7 in the conference.

The Game
Despite a teetering lead change early in the first quarter, VSU managed to break away to take control. A basket by Jalynn Spaulding and free throws by Bianca White gave the Trojans a 12-8 advantage over Claflin. The home team attempted to close the scoring gap, but Yazmen Hannah drew a foul off of a tipin, giving her a 3-point play.
At the end of the first quarter, VSU held a 15-3 led over the Panthers.
The Trojans took charge of the second quarter, securing over one-third of their game points. Finding space and opportunity to make plays, VSU went on numerous runs to extend their lead to double-figures.  The momentum sent the Trojans into halftime with a 39-26 lead.
Attempting to bounce back in the third quarter, Claflin got within seven points of tying the game, but VSU quickly answered back. As the quarter ticked away, Natalia Leaks and Hannah gave the Trojans additional baskets for a 50-36 lead.
Although the Panthers outscored the Trojans in the final quarter, 26-17, the Trojans had just enough edge to take the overall 67-62 victory.

Leaders
Yazmen Hannah led the Trojans with 16 points, followed by Natalia Leaks with 14 points. Autumn Hopson was not too far behind with 13 points, while Shalyn Washington rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points. Taking charge in other areas, Leaks controlled VSU's recoveries with 9 rebounds and followed through with plays tallying 4 assists.
