BOWIE, MD (February 1, 2020) - The VSU Trojan women's basketball team suffered a 70-40 CIAA Northern Division loss to the Bulldog of Bowie State University.
The road game moved the Trojans to an 8-15 overall record, 4-7 in the CIAA and 0-4 in the division.
The Game
Chiqueria Cook put the Trojans on the board in the opening quarter with a layup and jumper while the Bulldogs put up multiple shots to take an 18-4 first quarter lead.
VSU began to pick up the pace in the second quarter, but missed shots and turnovers plagued the team, hindering them from jumping ahead of BSU. The Trojans entered the locker room with a halftime score of 37-16.
The highest scoring quarter for the Trojans was the third, as they collected 15 points. Despite the extended deficit, VSU attempted to make an effort to bounce back.
Shalyn Washington gave the Trojans their last basket of the quarter with a shot from behind the arc, bring the score to 49-31, in favor of the home team.
Having a slow run in the final quarter, the Trojans gained momentum in the final minutes of the game, but it was not enough to take the win.
The Trojans ultimately took a 70-40 conference loss.
Leaders
Autumn Hopson led the Trojans with 13 points, 2 blocks and a single steal.
Natalia Leaks controlled the team's recoveries with 7 rebounds.
Up Next
The VSU women's basketball team will travel to Orangeburg, SC to take on the Panthers of Claflin University in a non-conference matchup on February 5. Tipoff is set for 5:30pm.
