Trojans Elevate to a 70-68 Win Over Lions after Symbolic Game Possession

LINCOLN, PA (January 27, 2020)-The Virginia State University men's basketball team elevated to a close 70-68 Northern Division win over the Lions of Lincoln after a symbolic road game possession.

The CIAA victory moves the Trojans to a 15-6 overall record, 9-1 in the conference.

First Half
Opening the road contest with heavy hearts, the Trojans followed suit with the rest of the world by paying homage to the late great Kobe Bryant. Carried out by VSU's #24 Armond Griebe, the Trojans did not cross half court with their first possession, receiving an "8" second violation. After their symbolic gesture, Griebe jump started the games scoring with a shot in the paint.
Although the scoring gap remained close for the opening minutes of the half, VSU worked to find a rhythm and stay in control. Andrew Corum with nine points, followed by William Vedder and Griebe with eight points, led the Trojans first half scoring. The 32-24 lead going into halftime would not have been possible without the recovery efforts of Lual Daniel Rahama with 8 rebounds.

Second Half
The Lions attempted to bounce back, but the Trojans continued to keep their distance with Walter Williams stepping in for some action followed by Ryan John for a shot from behind the arc. VSU was plagued with several missed baskets and turnovers, allowing Lincoln to tie the game 61-all and eventually take the lead.
The Trojans kicked their game into high gear as the battle for a victory intensified.  Corum landing a much needed 3-pointer to tie the game 67-all, followed by Griebe with a jumper give VSU the edge they needed to secure the win.
Despite Lincoln attempting to take the game with a final second 3-point shot, the missed basket working in favor of the Trojans with a final score of 70-68.

Leaders
After gaining 12 points in the second half, Andrew Corum rounded out the game with a Trojans game high of 21 points. Armond Griebe was next in line with 12 points, followed by Walter Williams and William Vedder with 10 points each. Lual Daniel Rahama and Williams were equally matched with 8 rebounds each, followed by Corum with 7.
