VSU Football Takes Down SAU Falcons, 34-7

RALEIGH, NC (September 21, 2019) - The Virginia State University football team took down the St. Augustine Falcons on the road with a 34-7 victory.

THE BASICS
MATCHUP: Virginia State (VSU) vs. St. Augustine (SAU)
FINAL SCORE: VSU 34 - SAU 7
SERIES RECORD: 13-4 (VSU)
SEASON RECORD: VSU (2-1), SAU (0-3)

FIRST HALF
Minutes into the games, Jevon LaPierre rushed for a touchdown with 12:25 left in the 1st quarter to give the Trojans an early 7-0 lead. Demetrius Strickland followed up giving VSU an edge with a 15 yard touchdown with 8:33 left in the quarter.

The second quarter was scoreless for both teams as VSU held strong to a 14-0 lead going into halftime.

Strickland led the half in rushing with 51 yards on 9 rushes for a single touchdown. Christian Nelson secured 3 carries for 50 yards, while Jesus Valenzuela punted for 81 yards on 2 punts.

SECOND HALF
Nick Woolfolk moved VSU to a 17-0 lead with a 42 yard kick to put VSU on the board for the 3rd quarter.

Despite Jerimiah Miller of the Falcons gaining a touchdown to bring the score to 17-7, Cordelral Cook made an 8 yard pass connection to Marquez Phillips in the final minutes of the 3rd quarter for a Trojans touchdown.

After 8 plays for 77 yards, Woolfolk returned to the field for 22 yard field goal in the 4th quarter for VSU. Strickland would soon make the final score of the contest with an 8 yard run off of 4 plays and 30 yards.

The Trojans capitalized off of the Falcons penalties and defensive error to secure the 34-7 win.

LEADERS
Offensively, Strickland rushed for 114 net yards and 2 touchdowns on 17 attempts, while Zion Johnson tallied 5 total tackles for the Trojans defensive.

UP NEXT
The Trojans will return to action on Sept. 28 as they host the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University. Kickoff is set to 6pm at Rogers Stadium.
