ETTRICK, VA (September 28, 2019) - The Virginia State University football team added another in to the books after securing a 31-15 home victory over the Johnson C. Smith University Golden Bulls.

FIRST HALF
Minutes into the game, JCSU's offensive leader Emanuel Wilson ran in for a 17 yard touchdown to give the visitor's a 6-0 lead over the Trojans. The Golden Bulls would have their final scoring efforts of the half with a 37 yard field goal, to keep the score in favor of the visitor's, 9-0. Freshman running back Darius Hagans put the Trojans on the board in the 1st quarter with a 2 yard touchdown run after 10 plays for 67 yard. VSU trialed, 9-7, going into the 2nd quarter.
The Trojan fans in Rogers Stadium stood to their feet when senior quarterback Cordelral Cook made a 37 pass connection to senior wide receiver Kier Townsend, landing him in the VSU end zone. The single 37 yard play moved the Trojans over the Golden Bulls, 14-9. Cook made an end zone appearance of his own with a 4 yard run, off of 5 plays for a total of 45 yards before the going into halftime.
VSU had an edge over JCSU at the half with a score of 21-9.

SECOND HALF
Junior kicker Jesus Valenzuela stepped in to put VSU on the board for the 3rd quarter with a 20 yard field goal after 10 plays for 90 yard. The Trojans rounded out the quarter with a 24-9 lead over JCSU.
VSU's junior running back Toure Wallace gave VSU their last touchdown of the game with a 14 yard run early in the 4th quarter. Despite Janarius Hood of the Golden Bulls gaining a 27 yard touchdown, the efforts were lost as VSU took the 31-15 win over JCSU. Â
The win marks the Trojans first conference victory, earning them a 1-0 CIAA record.

LEADERS
Offensively, Cook was 13-for-24 in pass completions for 158 yards and rushed for 63 net yards on 7 attempts for a single touchdown. Townsend covered 76 yards on 3 receptions for a single Trojans touchdown. Defensively, junior linebacker William Lulu led the charge for VSU with 12 total tackles, 10 solo and 2 assisted.
UP NEXT
The Trojans will return to action on October 5, as they host the Bears of Shaw University. Kickoff is set to 1pm at Rogers Stadium.
