Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Trojans Make Program History With 2000th Win

ETTRICK, VA (December 21, 2019) - The Virginia State University men's basketball team dominated the court with a 99-60 win over the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University to round the games of 2019.
Continuing his stint of making history, after just securing his 200th career win on December 14, Coach Lonnie Blow, Jr led the VSU Trojans to their 2000th program win after defeating JCSU. The VSU men's basketball team played their first game in 1924.
The Trojans currently hold a 9-4 overall record, while the Golden Bulls are 7-4 on the season.

FIRST HALF
The opening minutes of the half seemed to rule in favor of the Golden Bulls as they took a short lead. A shot from the perimeter by Armond Griebe moved the Trojans ahead, 10-9, giving them the start to their extended lead.
Capitalizing off of several JCSU turnovers and missed shots, VSU quickly took a double-figure lead, resulting in a 44-23 halftime lead.
Jarron Santos and Griebe controlled the half by landing 3 of 4 shots from behind the arc and 4 of 6 field goals respectively.

SECOND HALF
The Trojans continued to add to their extended lead for the second half of the matchup. The momentum of the game increased as VSU took a 30 point lead over JCSU.
Show stopping plays, to include a dunk by Jamal Washington, elevated the Trojans excitement for their history making win.
A final second shot by Williams Vedder put the Trojans a single point shy of a triple digit score.
After two complete halves, VSU sealed their 99-60 win over the JCSU Golden Bulls.
Second chance points (18-12), points off of a fast break (16-6) and points in the paint (36-20) gave the Trojans their extra edge for the win.

LEADERS
VSU had four Trojans to score in double-figures. Walter Williams led the way for the team with 17 points while Armond Griebe put up 16 points. William Vedder chipped in 14 points, followed by Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald who tallied 12 points. Staying consistent at the basket for VSU, Andrew Corum collected 11 rebounds for the home team.

UP NEXT
The Trojans host the Broncos of Fayetteville State University in January 4 to open the second half of the 2019-2020 season. The contest is set to tip-off at 4pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
