Trojans Unleash Triple-Digits Over Shaw Bears, 113-82

RALEIGH, NC (December 2, 2019)- The Virginia State University men's basketball team unleashed triple digit scoring over the Bears of Shaw University, to take a 113-82 conference win.

The victory moves the Trojans to a 5-3 overall record, 1-1 in the conference, while the Bears drop to a 3-3 overall record, 0-1 in the conference.

First Half

The opening minutes of the half took a quick turn in favor of VSU. Capitalizing off of several Bear turnovers, the Trojans defense and shooting skills extended the scoring gap. At the 10:00 mark, VSU had already accumulated a 17 point lead over the home team. Tallying eight 3-point shots in the half, VSU took control of the game and did not look back.

Walter Williams and Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald were equally matched in the first half, securing 14 points apiece for the Trojans.  Shooting 100 percent from behind the arc, Williams secured half of the 3-point shots for the Trojans.

VSU entered halftime with a 56-23 over the Shaw Bears.

Second Half

The second half mimicked the first as the Trojans continued to dominate the court. Armond Griebe led the half for VSU with 10 points, while Jamal Washington jumped in for 5 rebounds. The Trojans proceeded to show their skills gaining as much as a 43 point lead over the Bears.

The half and the game undoubtedly ruled in favor of VSU with a final score of 113-82.

Leaders

Five Trojans secured double-figure scoring to elevate the team to their win. Francis "BJ" Fitzgerald led the team with 21 points. Walter Williams followed suit with 16 points, while Armond Griebe tallied 14 points. Halil Parks and Antwan Miles rounded out the Trojans top scoring with 12 and 10 points respectively. Andrew Corum controlled the recoveries for VSU with 9 rebounds, while Fitzgerald was not too far behind with 8 rebounds.  

The game victory also included category leads in bench points (61-22), points in the paint (42-20), second chance points (13-7) and fast break points (4-2).

Up Next

The VSU men's basketball team will travel to Salisbury, NC to face the Blue Bears of Livingstone College on Thursday, December 5. The conference matchup is set for 7:30pm.
