ETTRICK, VA (November 30, 2019)- The VSU Trojans women's basketball team rounded out the 2019 VSU Thanksgiving Classic with a 71-56 win over the Jaguars of Augusta University. The victory moves VSU to a 4-3 overall record.
First Half
Despite the Jaguars applying pressure early in the first quarter, the Trojans prevailed, keeping the visiting team at a safe scoring distance. VSU made it a team effort to secure several shots to take the 23-17 first quarter lead.
Augusta attempted to bounce back early in the second quarter by closing the scoring gap, but the Trojans stayed consistent, going into halftime with a 35-28 lead.
Second Half
VSU kicked their game into high gear in the final two quarters of the matchup. Gaining majority of her points (16-of-18) in the second half, Natalia Leaks helped lift the Trojans to a double-figure scoring gap.
The third and fourth quarter breezed by as VSU secured their 71-56 win over the Jaguars of Augusta University.
Leaders
Natalia Leaks controlled the game for the Trojans with 18 points, followed by Autumn Hopson with 16 points. Yazmen Hannah and Jalynn Spaulding were equally matched with 8 rebounds apiece for VSU.
The game victory also included category leads in bench points (29-22) and points in the paint (34-30).
Up Next
The VSU women's basketball team will travel to Raleigh, NC to face the Bears of Shaw University on Monday, December 2. The conference matchup is set for 6pm.
