VSU Overpowers Bears on the Road, 62-47

RALEIGH, NC (December 2, 2019)- The VSU Trojan women's basketball team overpowered the Bears of Shaw University with a road victory of 62-47.

The conference win moves the Trojans to a 5-3 overall record, 1-1 in the conference, while the Bears drop to a 3-3 overall record, 0-1 in the conference.

First Half

Having a slow start to the matchup, the Trojans trailed the entire first quarter with a score of 14-7.

The team began to gain momentum in the second quarter as they made it a team effort to close the scoring gap. A shot from behind the arc by Yazmen Hannah tied the game 18-all, but the Bears answered back with a basket to regain the lead. Shalyn Washington gave VSU their second tied of the game with a layup, bringing the score to 20-all, but Shaw quick reclaimed the lead. Autumn Hopson ended the back and forth battle by securing a 3-pointer to take the 23-22 lead.

Working to keep their placement, VSU prevailed with a 25-24 halftime lead over Shaw.

Second Half

Despite the score tying twice in the opening minutes of the second half, a 10-0 run moved the Trojans ahead of the Bears for a strong lead. Although Shaw landed the last shot of the quarter, VSU had a 42-34 leading entering the final quarter of the game.

Staying in control of the game, the Trojans extended their lead to double-digit figures to ensure their victory.

The half and the game undoubtedly ruled in favor of VSU with a final score of 62-47.

Leaders

Yazmen Hannah led the charge for the Trojans with a season high of 14 points. Autumn Hopson and Jalynn Spaulding rounded out the double figure scoring for VSU with 12 and 10 points respectively. Chiqueria Cook continues to have a strong presence under the basket, leading the team with eight rebounds and three blocks.

The game victory also included category leads in bench points (36-10), points off of turnovers (28-15) and points in the paint (24-16).

Up Next

The VSU women's basketball team will travel to Salisbury, NC to face the Blue Bears of Livingstone College on Thursday, December 5. The conference matchup is set for 5:30pm.
