ETTRICK, VA (November 29, 2019)- The VSU Trojans women's basketball team defeated the Dragons of Virginia University of Lynchburg (VUL) for day 1 of the 2019 VSU Thanksgiving Classic. VSU's
Autumn Hopson scored 21 points, to include shooting 5-of-8 from the 3-point line, ultimately allowing her to help lift the Trojans to their 77-62 win. The victory moves VSU to a 3-3 overall record.
First Half
The opening quarter of the contest saw a battle between the Trojans and Dragons as they worked to control the game. The score remained close, but VSU continued to have a slight edge over VUL. The quarter ended in favor of the Trojans, 21-15.
VUL bounced back in the second quarter to tie the game and take a small lead. Despite their tough defense, several missed shots by VUL put the Trojans ahead of the game with a, 30-27, lead going into halftime.
Second Half
The Trojans pulled away in the final two quarter, securing a double-figure scoring gap. Although the game was plagued with missed shots and turnovers, VSU prevailed by scoring 47 of their 77 points in the second half.
After four quarters, VSU took a 77-62 win over the VUL Dragons.

Four Trojans secured double-figures in their victory over the Dragons.
Autumn Hopson led the way for the Trojans with a season high of 21 points.
Chiqueria Cook,
Yazmen Hannah and
Shalyn Washington rounded out VSU's top scoring with 12 points, 11 points and 10 points respectively. Cook controlled the Trojans recoveries with 8 rebounds.
The game victory also included category leads in second chance points (11-7), bench points (33-25) fast break points (16-14), and points in the paint (30-24).

The VSU women's basketball team will be back in action at the VSU Multipurpose Center on Saturday, November 30 for day 2 of the 2019 VSU Thanksgiving Classic. The Trojans will face Augusta University for a 3pm tip-off.
