CHARLOTTE, NC (November 21, 2019) - The VSU Trojan women's basketball team fell to the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University in a non-conference road matchup with a final score of 68-44.
The Trojans are currently 0-3 on the season, while the Golden Bulls now hold a 4-1 overall record.
First Half
The opening minutes of the game saw missed shots and turnovers from both teams. Despite JCSU securing the first buckets of the game, VSU's
Tajah Clark landed a shot from behind the arc to put the board. Although
Autumn Hopson gave the Trojans a good shot in the paint, the Golden Bulls took an extended run to hold their lead. VSU trailed 19-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Mimicking the opening quarter, the Trojans attempted to get in the game, but missed shots and lack of rebounds plagued the Trojans advances. The halftime score ruled in favor of the hosting Golden Bulls, with a score of 32-14.
Second Half
Returning to the court with extra momentum for the final two quarters was VSU's
Natalia Leaks. Leaks stepped in with a game high of 19 points as she looked to lift the Trojans from their trailing score.
Despite VSU's efforts to take the lead in the second half, it was not enough to close the double digit scoring gap. At the end of regulation, VSU took a 68-44 loss to the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls.
Leaders
Natalia Leaks controlled the game with 19 points while
Shalyn Washington tallied a game high of 9 rebounds. Leaks was not too far behind with 8 rebounds of her own.
Up Next
The Trojans host the Panthers of Claflin University on November 23. This contest will mark VSU's first home game of the season. The contest is set to tip-off at 2pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
