ETTRICK, VA (November 23, 2019)- The VSU Trojans women's basketball team began their 2019-2020 conference play with a 70-62 win over the Panthers of Claflin University.
The victory moves VSU to a 1-3 overall record, 1-0 in the conference, while Claflin falls to a 0-5 over record, 0-1 in the conference
First Half
Several missed shots and turnover plagued the opening minutes of the matchup.
Bianca White secured the first basket of the game, jump starting the Trojans 8-0 run over the Panthers. VSU worked to stay in charge of the game, as Claflin struggled with ball control. At the end of the first quarter, the Trojans took an 18-7 lead over the Panthers.
VSU managed to hold Claflin under 10 points for majority of the quarter. Taking the second largest lead of the half, the Trojans jumped ahead with a score of 30-9 at the 4:03 mark. The Trojans would soon enter the locker room with a halftime score of 36-19.
Second Half
Despite the Panthers attempt to bounce back in the final half of the game, VSU kept a safe distance in the scoring gap.
After a third quarter score of 51-39, the Trojans stayed consistent to take the win with a final score of 70-62.
Leaders
Natalia Leaks controls the court for the Trojans for the second consecutive contest. Earning her first double-double of the season, Leaks secured 19 points and 11 rebounds. Also scoring in the double-digits for the VSU was
Bianca White with 13 points.
The game victory also included categories leads in points off of turnovers (19-15), second chance points (17-4), fast break points (10-4), and points in the paint (38-20).
Up Next
VSU will host Regent University for a non-conference matchup on Monday, November 25. Tip-off is set for 5:30pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center. The game will also show appreciation for the VSU Faculty, Staff and their families for all they do for the University.
