BOWIE, Md. (January 30,2019) – The Virginia State University women's basketball team late rally secures a 53-51 victory over the Bulldogs of Bowie State University tonight at the A.C. Jordan Arena. With the victory the Trojans snap a five game losing streak and improve to 9-10 overall, 3-7 in CIAA play and 1-3 in the Northern Division.
The Trojans were led offensively by
Autumn Hopson and
Shayln Washington with both adding 11 points each respectively. Senior
Chrisanna Green finished the contest with a double-double performance posting 10 points and 12 rebounds.
Aja Robertson contributed nine points.
Yazmen Hannah came off the Virginia State bench to record seven points.
Virginia State held an early 2-0 lead to start the game, but Bowie State answered with taking a 4-2 advantage with 6:42 left in the quarter. The Trojans then answered with a three pointer by
Autumn Hopson to give them a 5-4 edge. The lead would go back and forth over the next few minutes with both team tying the game eight all with 2:13 left in the first quarter. The Trojans then jumped out to a 10-8 lead, before the Bulldogs answered with tying the game for the third time with the Bulldogs ending the quarter with a 12-10 edge.
The Bulldogs kept the foot on the gas in the second quarter, pushing their lead to (18-15) by the 4:39 mark and carried a 23-18 advantage into halftime.
Virginia State started the third quarter with a three pointer trimming the deficit to 25-21 by the 9:03 mark. The Trojans continued to add points to the board them within five at 35-30 with 2:34 left in the quarter.
Chrisanna Green then added a three pointer to cut the Bulldogs lead to 37-33 with 1:55to go in the quarter. The Bulldogs continued to add points to the board as they closed out the third quarter with a 41-35 advantage.
The Trojans when used a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter with the VSU securing a 44-41 lead with 6:24 left in the contest. Virginia State continued to grow its lead 50-46 with 00:34 seconds left. Bowie State (16-4, 8-3, 1-3) was led by Kyaja Williams with 19 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

> Bowie State University shot 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the floor and 75 percent (9-of-12) from the free-throw line

> BSU tallied 16 points off VSU turnovers and six second-chance points
