Women's Basketball Fall to Chowan University, 59-47

ETTRICK, Va. (January 23, 2019)– The Virginia State University women's basketball team (8-9, 2-6 CIAA, 0-2 Northern Division) suffered a tough 59-47 loss to the Hawks of Chowan University tonight. 
 
Virginia State opened the contest outscoring the Hawks 16-13 after one quarter. Chowan then continued to put points on the board outscoring the Trojans in the second, 13-12, as Virginia State took a 28-26 advantage at the half. The Hawks secured a 46-35 advantage after three periods and rolled to a 59-47 victory over Virginia State. The Trojans was led by junior guard Yazmen Hannah recording 13 points, two rebounds and two assists.  
 
Hannah scored 13 points in 40 minutes of play. The Hickory, North Carolina native was five-for-eight from the floor and three-for-six from the three point line. Senior Chrisanna Green recorded 10 points, nine rebound and two assists.

Danielle Weldon led the Hawks in double figures with contributing 13 total points.
 
How It Happened
Virginia State opened the contest outscoring the Hawks 16-13 after one quarter. Chowan then continued to put points on the board outscoring the Trojans in the second, 13-12, as Virginia State took a 28-26 advantage at the half. 
 
Yazmen Hannah secured the opening basket to start the third quarter to bring the score 37-31. Yazmen Hannah added a basket to cut the Hawks lead making the score 46-35 with 00:46 seconds left in the quarter. Chowan ended the quarter with a 46-35 advantage.  
 
Chowan continued to put up points over the remaining minutes to close out the game giving them a 59-47 victory. Chrisanna Green collected a basket with 2:36 left in the contest to close out the scoring for the Trojans.
 
Inside the Numbers
> Virginia  State was 17-of-47 (36.2 percent) shooting and eight-of-15 (53.3 percent) from the charity stripe
> Chowan University shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the floor and 78.6 percent (11-of-14) from the free-throw line
> Virginia State finished with 14 points off Chowan turnovers and four second-chance points
> CU tallied eight points off VSU turnovers and four second-chance points
 
UP NEXT: The Trojans will next travel to Elizabeth City, North Carolina for a CIAA Northern Division Matchup on Saturday, January 26. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
