ETTRICK, Va. – The Virginia State University football team (1-2, 1-0 CIAA) will host the Bears of Shaw University (1-2, 0-0 CIAA) on Saturday, Sept. 29. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m.

Saturday's tilt will be the 56th meeting between the two teams. The Trojans hold a 41-11-4 series record over the Bears. The last time the two school faced each other was on October 5, 2013 with a final score of 14-10 in favor of the Trojans.
Virginia State will open its 2018 home opener of the season. The Trojans enter Saturday's contest coming off a 43-14 victory over Johnson C. Smith University Saturday, September 22 at Irwin Belk Complex.
Offensively, VSU was led by
Cordelral Cook, throwing for 191 yards, completing 17-of-29 passes and three touchdowns to lead the Virginia State offense. Senior
Tre'Quan Reed completed the contest with a total of 80 total yards and three receiving yards along with one touchdown. Jesus Valenzulea (Hampton, Virginia) recorded 203 total punting yards for the game. Freshman
Andre Jackson led VSU in kick returns adding a total of 76 yards.
Defensively, sophomore
Kwabe Boateng (Woodbridge, Virginia) led the Trojans, recording a total of 3.5 total tackles, two sacks and two tackles for loss.
Patrick Prosser also contributed 3.5 total tackles and one tackle for loss.
Rashard Jones and
Dhevyn Anderson both added three tackles each for the Trojans. VSU outlasted the Golden Bulls in passing yards, securing 306 to the JCSU 158.
Shaw University (1-2, 0-0) enters Saturday's contest coming off a 42-0 football loss to Campbell University on Saturday night, Sept. 22 at the Barker-Lane Stadium.
For the game, Shaw finished with 174 yards of offense that featured 106 on the ground and 68 through the air. Senior quarterback
Keon Marsh (Queens, NY) completed 7-of-14 passes for 68 yards while junior wide receiver
Marquis Gorham (Greenville, NC) tallied 33 yards on two receptions. Defensively, sophomore linebacker
Jaleel Scroggins (Raleigh, NC) finished with 11 tackles, followed by sophomore defensive lineman
Brandyne Mackey (Orange Park, FL) charted a career-high nine tackles in the setback.
Following Saturday's tilt, the Trojans will host its second home game of the season as they host the Vikings of Elizabeth City State University on Oct. 6. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
