Virginia State Football Opens 2018 Season At Norfolk State

The Trojans will travel to Norfolk State for 2018 season opener on Saturday, Sept. 1

ETTRICK, Va. – Virginia State University men's football opens a new campaign this week, traveling to Norfolk, Va. to face the Spartans of Norfolk State University Saturday, Sept. 1. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. The matchup between the Trojans and the Spartans will be broadcasted, live on WVST 91.3 FM HERE. Live stats are available by clicking here. The defending Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association champions the Virginia State University Trojans is coming off an undefeated regular season 10-0 (10-1 overall record) during the 2017 campign. On September 2, 2017, in front of a crowd of 10,221, the Virginia State University (VSU) Trojans Football team opened its 2017 season with a 14-10 victory on the road against the Spartans of Norfolk State University (NSU).
 
The Trojans outgained the Spartans, 275-214 yards, including a 190-98 edge on the ground. Individually for VSU, Cook finished with 74 yards on a 12-for-19 performance while throwing two interceptions. Cook also rushed for 22 yards and two touchdowns. Senior Trenton Cannon finished the game with a total of 145 rushing yards for the Trojans.  After a five-year hiatus of the Labor Day Classic, the Trojans were able to secure the victory over NSU for the first time since 2005. VSU holds a 27-20-1 series lead over Norfolk State University.
 
Norfolk State, a member of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference finished the 2017 season with an 4-7 overall record. During the last meeting Carter led NSU with 39 yards rushing on four carries and 67 yards on 7-of-19 passing. Tripp Harrington, who started the game and split time with Carter, was 6-of-12 for 49 yards and also rushed for 17 yards. Taylor led all players with seven receptions for 84 yards. Defensively, Price (game-high 10) and nose guard Deshaywn Middleton (nine) both posted career highs in tackles.
 
Following Saturday's game, the Trojans will continue its travel as they face Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) opponent Robert Morris. Kickoff is slated for 12 pm on Saturday, September 8 at Joe Walton Stadium.
