VSU Women’s Basketball Set to Face Edinboro University

ETTRICK, Va. (March 8, 2018) –  The No. 5 seed Virginia State University women's basketball teams will travel to Richmond, Virginia to face the No. 4 seed Edinboro University (EU) at the Barco-Stevens Hall on the campus of Virginia Union University on Friday, March 9. The women's game will tipoff at 7:30 p.m.
 
The matchup between the Trojans and the Fighting Scots will be broadcasted live on WVST 91.3 FM HERE.
 
The Women's Game: The Trojans (23-5) defeated the Rams of Winston Salem State University 83-65 in the quarter finals round of the 2018 CIAA Basketball
tournament advancing to the semifinals. In the semifinals round the Trojans fell, 49-53, to the Bulldogs of Bowie State University. Edinboro clinched an automatic bid to the postseason after defeating Millersville in the PSAC Championship contest, 77-66. The Fighting Scots victory over the Marauders in the PSAC Championship title marks Edinboro's fifth PSAC conference tournament title and fourth since 2011. Edinboro improved to 26-3 on the season with the win.

The last time VSU and EU met was on December 7, 2014, where the Trojans fell short of a win, 64-72, despite a late rally at McComb Fieldhouse.  The Fighting Scots built an early 31-14 lead and would lead 38-24 at halftime. Edinboro would extend its lead to as much as 19 points at 62-43 with 7:00 remaining in the game after a Maggie Moore layup. Virginia State would soon put together an 11-4 run. Two minutes later, VSU's Tiffanie Adair scored on a layup with 1:54 to play to bring the deficit back to single digits. Aignee' Freeland responded with a jumper at the 1:22 mark to make it 72-61. Da'Shae Jones would make it 72-64 with 1:12 remaining, but that ended the scoring. 

The Fighting Scots shot 30-for-62 (48.4 percent) from the floor compared to 23-for-55 (41.8 percent) for Virginia State. Edinboro made 7-for-13 (53.8 percent) on 3-pointers while the Trojans went 5-for-12 (41.7 percent). Edinboro committed just nine turnovers and had 20 assists on 30 field goals made. The Trojans committed 16 turnovers.

Virginia State was led by Adair who registered a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Jones added 15 points off the bench along with a team-high five assists

The winner of Friday's Edinboro-Virginia State game will move on to Atlantic Regional semifinal contest on Saturday between the winner of the PSAC Championship game and will play the winner of No. 1 Virginia Union and No. 8 Bowie State.
