Baseball Yielded a Split Decision to Bluefield State in Doubleheader Action

MOORESVILLE, NC- The Virginia State University baseball team yielded a split decision to the Big Blues of Bluefield State College (BSC) this afternoon in doubleheader action.

Game 1: Bluefield State 10, Virginia State 6
The opening game of the day saw Bluefield State College jump out to a 4-0 lead with four runs on three hits in the bottom of the first. The Big Blues then added three runs in the bottom of the second to increase its lead to seven. The Trojans got on the board at the top of the third with Justin Nase secured a homerun to bring Henderson across home plate. VSU cut BSC's lead, 7-2.


Virginia State added one run in the fifth inning to cut the lead 9-3. The Trojans tacked on two runs in the sixth making the score 10-5. The Trojans added another run in the top of the seventh with Jahleel Sewer doubling to right field. Freshman Keyon Smith then hit a sacrifice fly out to left field, bringing Sewer across home plate. The Trojans could not get any closer as the Big Blues held on for the win.

Virginia State was led by Justin Nase who went 2-for-4 with a homerun and two RBIs. Austin Stambaugh earned the win with a pitching six innings.

Game 2: Virginia State 15, Bluefield State 11
Virginia State got on the board early with a single run at the top of the first. The Big Blues then added four runs in the bottom of the second to take a 4-1 lead. The Trojans then answered with adding seven runs in the top of the fourth and fifth innings to take an 8-4 lead. BSC soon added three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead 8-7. The Trojans then added six runs in the top of the seventh inning. Virginia State would only allow three runs from Bluefield State in the seventh inning to give the Trojans a 15-11 win.

VSU will travel to Cary, N.C. for a contest against William Peace University on April 3 with the first pitch slated for 5 pm. The contest will be played at the USA Baseball National Training Complex.
