Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (February 7, 2018) – The Virginia State University's women basketball suffered a 62-52 loss to the Panthers of Virginia Union University tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center in their Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) match-up.
With the loss the Trojans end their four game winning streak. Virginia State University now moves to a 19-3 overall record, 9-3 in the CIAA, while the Panthers improve to a 21-2 record, 11-1 in the conference.
Senior guard Alexis Smith posted 17 points, three rebounds, and seven assists to lead the way for the Trojans.
Virginia State shot 30 percent from the field, and 56 percent from the free throw line. Senior guard Keyana Brown was VSU's second-leading scorer, contributing 14 points. Junior forward Chrisanna Green tallied seven points and eight total rebounds while Dionna Marcus contributed seven points, six rebounds and one steal.
The Trojans set the tone early, fueling a 10-4 VSU lead to by the 4:25 mark in the opening quarter. Virginia State controlled the court with a 18-11 lead to close out the first quarter.
In the second stanza, Virginia State led 25-24 by the 1:21 mark. The Trojans proceeded to hold VUU scoreless the remainder of the half to take a three-point advantage into the break, 27-24.
With 5:50 to go in the third, a layup by VUU's Alexis Johnson tied the game for the first time, 30-all. The Panthers then took a three point lead. Chrisanna Green's three-pointer at the 3:00 mark tied the game for the second time, 33-all. VUU netted 11 points in the final minutes of the quarter, to take a 44-39 lead heading into the final period.
The Trojans continued to fight, cutting the Panthers lead 56-50 by the 3:23 mark on a layup by Alexis Smith. Despite Virginia State adding 13 points in the final period while the Panthers added 18 points, the Trojans fell, 62-52.
Virginia Union University leading scorers were Alexis Johnson and Shareka McNeil, who finished the contest with 13 points each.
