Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (February 5, 2018)- The Virginia State University Trojan baseball team closed out the season opening weekend with a tie to the Tigers of Salem University at Whaley Colbert Field yesterday.
Sophomore Aaron Harris (Chesterfield, Va.) led the charge for the Trojans with one run and 3 RBI's. Also crossing home plate for VSU were senior Julian White (Yorktown, Va.), junior Jahleel Sewer (Hampton, Va.), freshman Justin Nase (Prince George, Va.), freshman Keyon Smith (Richmond, Va.) and sophomore Delmarcus Talley (Virginia Beach, Va.)
The Tigers got on the board early with one run at the top of the first inning. The Trojans then answered with adding a run on a fielder's choice. With no home plate action in the 2nd and 3rd inning, the Trojans regained momentum at the bottom of the 5th inning with Keyon Smith being walked to make the bases loaded, and bringing Jahleel Sewer across home plate. After Harris hit a single to center field and advanced to second, Smith, Talley and White scored, giving sophomore Aaron Harris 3 RBIs. Closing out the 5th inning for VSU, Nase singled to center field, allowing Harris to score, giving the Trojans a 6-4 lead.
Answering back at the top of the 5th and 6th inning, Salem managed to tie the game 6-6. After the 7th inning the game was called and ended with a tie.
On the mound for VSU was sophomore Joshua Welcher (Newport News, Va.) with 3 strike out in his 6 innings and junior Jason Martinez (Stafford, Va.) taking over for the remaining inning with a single strike out.

The Trojans will return to the field on February 10-11 for a weekend series against Claflin University in Orangeburg, S.C. First pitch is set to begin at 1pm.
