Box Score 2 ETTRICK, Va. – On the surface, Virginia State defeated the Tigers of Salem University (10-9, 10-9) today at Whaley Colbert Field. However, the victories had much more meaning than usual. With the final inning played, Merrill Morgan found himself the winner of his 300th career game.
Virginia State (2-0) started the season off with impressive work from the pitching mound. Gerald Taylor started things off for the Trojans pitching five innings. The Dinwidde, Va. product scattered 10 hits while striking out two and walking one.
The Trojans got on the board in the second inning when Julian White scored on a fly out to left field by Delmarcus Talley. Virginia State added nine runs in the sixth and seventh frames completing the contest with 26 RBI's.
Game two saw each school score six runs in the third inning. Josh LaPrest hit a homerun to bring three across home plate. Virginia State answered in the home half of the frame with six runs of their own. Two walks by the Tigers added two runs for the Trojans. Adarius Moody doubled to center field bringing Jahleel Sewer home. A fly out by to right field Keyon Smith advanced Hinton across home plate. Closing the sixth inning out for VSU, Aaron Harris doubled and Adarius Moody added one to the board.
Both teams then added one run each in the fourth and seventh innings to tie the score 7 all. Jahleel Sewer recorded his first homerun of the season in the seventh inning. A balk by the Tigers added a point for the Trojans to secure the victory.
Congratulations to Coach Morgan on his monumental 300 wins!
The Trojans will host the Tigers for the final game of the three-game series tomorrow with first pitch slated for 1 pm.
