Women’s Basketball Secures Win Over LU Lions

Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (February 24, 2018) – The Virginia State University Women's Basketball team closed out the 2018 regular season with a 59-51 victory over the Lions of Lincoln University this afternoon at the VSU Multipurpose Center.

Junior Chrisanna Green led the Trojans collecting 18 points and nine rebounds in her 37 minutes played. Senior Alexis Smith was VSU's second leading scorer finishing the contest with 17 points and four rebounds. Keyana Brown finished with nine points, four rebounds, one block and one steal.  Senior Mia Fitts chipped in with seven points and three rebounds. Aja Robertson and Endia McKinney contributed four points each.  

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Virginia State started the contest with a 3-0 lead at the 8:12 mark. Lincoln University  tied the game at the 7:11 mark, with a three pointer by Tiera Pendleton. Virginia State then pushed the lead to 9-6, nailing a layup by Alexis Smith. With 3:31 left in the quarter, a free throw shot by VSU's Chrisanna Green made the score 10-8 in favor of the Trojans. VSU then jumped to a 15-11 lead to close out the opening stanza.
 
 
Second Quarter:
Virginia State then jumped to a 23-14 lead in the first four minutes of the quarter.  The Lions then secures two free throws to cut the lead, 26-19 at the 4:11 mark. Senior Alexis Smith knocked down two free throws to keep adding points to the board and growing VSU's lead, 29-22. The Trojans then secured a layup at the buzzer to take a 31-22 lead into the locker room.
 
Third Quarter:
Chrisanna Green secured the opening basket at the 9:14 mark to take a 33-22 advantage. Virginia State extended the lead to as high as 16 points late in the third quarter.  The Trojans would keep the contest in their favor despite the Lions' attempts to take the lead. Lincoln then knocked down two free throws by McKenzie Spencer to cut the deficit to 55-42 with 00:03 seconds left in the quarter. VSU led 55-42 heading to the final stanza.
 
Fourth Quarter:
VSU led by 15 when the Lions started to surge, scoring nine straight points making the score 59-53 with 2:23 left.  VSU scored a basket followed by Aja Robertson three free throws in the final 48 seconds to seal the win for the Trojans. VSU shot 38.9% from the field (21-54) and 60.7% (17-28) from the free throw line.  Lincoln outrebounded the Trojans 42-32.

Virginia State's next game will be during the 2018 CIAA Tournament at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.  Opponent and time to be determined.
