Despite a Late Rally, Trojans Fall to the Bulldogs of Bowie State, 68-54

Bowie, Md. (February 21, 2018) – The Virginia State University (VSU) women's Basketball team suffered a tough 56-68 loss to the Bulldogs of Bowie State University (BSU) at the A.C. Jordan Arena this afternoon.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Chrisanna Green led the Trojans with 18 points, nine rebounds and one steal. Alexis Smith finished with 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Mia Fitts chipped in with 11 points. Endia McKinney contributed 8 points, two assists and two steals while Dionna Marcus chipped in with 4 points.
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
BSU started the contest with a 7-0 run within the first two minutes. Mia Fiits secured the opening basket for the Trojans at the 7:09 mark, to cut the Bulldogs lead 7-3. VSU then added a basket at the 2:40 mark, giving the Bulldogs a one-point advantage (7-6). BSU answered, by making a basket, advancing to a 9-6 lead at the 2:18 mark. The Trojans then added a layup by Chrisanna Green, to make the score 9-8 with 1:54 left on the clock. The Bulldogs then pushed the lead to 13-10 by the 0:49 mark. With only 0:03 second left in the quarter, a three-pointer by Endia McKinney tied the game 13 all to end the quarter.
 

Second Quarter:
Alexis Smith secured a three pointer to edge the Bulldogs 16-13 at the 8:39 mark. BSU answered by adding a layup, shot by Lisa Jing to cut VSU's lead 16-15.  A three pointer by Endia McKinney helped the Trojans advance the lead, 20-15 with 6:04 left on the clock. VSU then continued to add points to the board, advancing the lead, 25-17, at the 3:57 mark. The Trojans added its final four points in the remaining minutes, taking a 29-28 lead into the locker room.
 

Third & Fourth Quarter:
The Trojans scored the opening basket on a jumper, by Chrisanna Green to give VSU a 31-28 lead. Mia Fitts then added a three-pointer, to extend VSU's lead to 34-28 at the 8:30 mark. Bowie State then added 2 baskets, closing the deficit to 38-32 by the 6:12 mark of the third quarter. Fitts then added two from the free throw line to make the score 40-32, in favor of the Trojans.  With 0:45 seconds left to go in the third quarter, Chrisanna Green added one from the free throw line to give VSU a 43-41 advantage to end the quarter.

VSU started the final quarter with a 45-42 lead at the 9:11 mark. BSU then tied the game 45-45 all with 8:38 left on the game clock. The Bulldogs then edged its lead 48-45, with a three-pointer by Kyah Proctor at the 7:53 mark. With 3:31 left in the quarter, a layup by Chrisanna Green cut BSU's lead 57-48. Alexis Smith then secured a jumper for the Trojans, putting the score within 9 points.  A pair of free throws by Chatman, followed by one from the free throw line by Kyah Proctor advanced the Bulldogs 62-50, with 2:18 remaining in regulation. VSU's Chrisanna Green knocked down the remaining baskets for the Trojans, bringing the final score 68-54, in favor of the Bulldogs to seal the win.
  
 

UP NEXT
VSU will host the Lions of Lincoln University in its final home game of the 2018 regular season on Saturday, February 24 at the VSU Multipurpose Center.  Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
