Baseball Takes Two Against Stratford University

ETTRICK, Va. (February 15, 2017) - The Virginia State University baseball team swept the Cardinals of Stratford University (10-6, 8-6) in doubleheader action this afternoon at Whaley Colbert Field. With the victories the Trojans improve to 6-1-1.

 

Game 1

The Trojans got on the board in the first inning.  Aaron Harris singled on the first pitch at bat, scoring two runs.

 

Virginia State's offense came alive as they tallied four runs in the second inning.  Sisqo Scott doubled scoring two followed by a Julian White home run who brought two across home plate, to give the Trojans an early six run lead.

 

Jarren Norman was credited with the victory for Virginia State in his first appearance of the season. He surrendered four runs on eight hits over five and two-thirds innings, striking out four. Larry Stephens threw one and one-third innings in relief out of the bullpen.

 

Korvich took the loss for Stratford. He lasted one and two-thirds of an innings, allowing eight hits and six runs while striking out two.

 

The Trojans racked up twelve hits on the day.  Sisqo Scott chipped in three hits and three RBIs. CJ Henderson, Adarius Moody, and Aaron Harris all collected multiple hits for Virginia State.  Julian White helped out the offense by driving in three runs as well.

 

GAME 2

 

The Trojans would extend their current win streak to four games as they took game two to complete the sweep. An early lead helped propel Virginia State to an 8-6 victory over Stratford.

 

Gerald Taylor got the win for the Trojans. He surrendered three runs on eight hits over five innings, striking out two and walking one.  Josh Welcher and Jamar Hinton entered the game out of the bullpen and helped to close out the game in relief.  Hinton recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

 

 

Virginia State University Trojans tallied eight hits on the day.  Aaron Harris, Justin Nase, and Sewer all collected multiple hits. Sewer, Nase, and Harris each collected two hits. Harris drove in two RBIs, while Joshua Heigh, Liam Fahy and Sewer also drove in an RBI.

 

The Trojans will return to action on February 24 as they host Shepherd University in regional doubleheader action. First pitch is slated for 10 am.
