ETTRICK, Va. (December 31, 2018) – In its last game of 2018 the Virginia State University men's basketball team secured a 95-78 win over Barton College in the VSU Multipurpose Center Monday afternoon.
With the victory the Trojans improves to 9-3 overall while Barton College men's basketball team drops to 9-5 overall.
Senior guard
Jalen Jackson led the team with 17 points on 6-of-12 shooting from the field.
Jahmere Howze and
Brandon Holley finished with 14 points each.
Cedric Wiggins finished with 12 points and
Andrew Corum collected 11 points.
Virginia State secured a lead in the first five minutes of the game, with the Trojans securing a 13-8 edge following a layup by
Andrew Corum with 14:53 left in the first half. The next six minutes saw both teams trade baskets, before a layup by
Armond Griebe securing a 28-18 lead with 8:18 remaining until halftime.
Virginia State continued took control of the first half over the next seven minutes, out-scoring the Bulldogs to take a 39-29 advantage at the half.
The Trojans continued to grow its lead of the evening over the first nine minutes of the second half to establish a 66-59 lead with 10:22 to play in the game.
Back-to-back buckets by Barton College quickly drew the Bulldogs within single digits at 66-61 with just under nine minutes left, but Virginia State notched six-unanswered to rebuild its lead to 15 at the seven-minute mark. Trojans continued to add points to the board over the remaining minutes allowing Virginia State to close out the win.
The Trojans finished the afternoon shooting 34 of 69 (49.3 percent), and were 15 of 19 (78.9 percent) from the free-throw line.
