ETTRICK, Va. (December 13, 2018) - The Virginia State University women's basketball team secured a 61-54 victory to the Lady Falcons of Saint Augustine's tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
Virginia State (7-2, 1-0 CIAA) opened the contest outscoring the Lady Falcons 19-7 after one quarter. Virginia State continued to put points on the board outscoring the Lady Falcons in the second, 13-12, as Virginia State took a 32-19 lead into the half. Virginia State secured a 55-26 advantage after three periods and rolled to a 61-54 victory to earn its first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association win of the season.
Green scored 11 points in 36 minutes of play. The Jamestown, New York native was 4-of-7 from the line and finished with 13 rebounds.
Yazmen Hannah recorded 12 points, three rebounds, five assist and two steals.
Angela Caraballo led the Lady Falcons in double figures with contributing 18 total points. Renwicks contributed 12 points.
How It Happened
Virginia State opened the game with a 19-7 lead over St. Augustine's to close out the first quarter. The Trojans would build the lead to 13 in the second quarter, but the Lady Falcons continued to rally but the Trojans secured a 32-19 advantage to close out the first half.
Taylor Hayes secured the opening basket to start the third quarter to grow its lead 34-21.
Taylor Hayes layup continued to advance the Trojan score 40-23 with 4:00 left in the quarter. St. Augustine's then added a basket to cut VSU's lead 50-26 with just 00:57 seconds to play in the period.
Autumn Hopson added two from the free throw line to close of the scoring for the Trojans bringing the score 55-26.
Virginia State continued to put up points over the remaining minutes to close out the game giving the Trojans the 61-54 victory. St. Augustine's added its last basket of the contest with 00:10 seconds left when Kiana Clark collecting a three-pointer to round out the Falcons scoring.
Yazmen Hannah added two from the free throw line with 00:29 second left to close out the scoring for the Trojans.

> Virginia State was 20-of-49 (40.8 percent) shooting and 15-of-27 (55.6 percent) from the charity stripe
> St. Augustine's University shot 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the floor and 60 percent (6-of-10) from the free-throw line

> Virginia State finished with 20 points off SAU turnovers and two second-chance points
> SAU tallied 18 points off VSU turnovers and six second-chance points
