Virginia State Men Upends St. Augustine's in CIAA Play

ETTRICK, Va. (Dec. 13, 2018)– The Virginia State University men's basketball team secured its first conference victory over St. Augustine's University 69-54 tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center.    

Virginia State University seniors Cyonte Melvin and Jahmere Howze led the way for the Trojans with 13 points and three rebounds each. Brandon Holley added 11 points and two rebounds. VSU improves to 6-3 on the year (1-0 CIAA), while the Falcons fall to 2-7 overall (0-3 CIAA).
 
KEY STATS

- VSU shot 42.9 percent from the field; St. Augustine's shot 40 percent
- Virginia hit five triples (23.8 percent); St. Augustine's knocked down four threes on 21.1 percent shooting
- The Trojans were 16-for-23 at the free throw line while the Falcons were 10-for-11
- VSU held a 29-27 rebounding advantage; the Falcons had 10 turnovers to VSU's seven

Cyonte Melvin had 13 points and three rebounds

- Tyre Gathright was 10-for-19 from the field, 1-for-4 from three-point range and perfect at the free throw line (6-for-6)
- Gathright added four rebounds and two steals
-Donte Edwards  had eight points on three-of-six shooting
- D.J. Harrison contributed seven points on one-of-one shooting from the free throw line

The Trojans will host the Broncos of Fayetteville State University on December 15th. Tip-off is slated 8 p.m. at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
