Richmond, Va. (November 9, 2018) - Yazmen Hannah poured in a team-high 19 points in her debut as the Virginia State University women's basketball team dropped its season opener to Edinboro, 67-60, tonight at Barco-Stevens Arena.
Virginia State (0-1) trailed 17-15 after one quarter and the Trojans outscored the Fighting Scots in the second, 15-13, as Edinboro took a 30-27 lead into the half. Edinboro (1-0) extended the margin to 52-45 after three periods and rolled to a 67-60 victory to earn its first win of the season.
Green scored 13 points in 38 minutes of play. The Jamestown, New York native was 3-of-14 from the line and finished with five rebounds, one assist, two blocks and one steal.
Shayln Washington recorded her first double-double of the season finishing with 12 point and 10 rebounds.
Ciara Rosten and Jontay Walton led four Edinboro players in double figures with all four contributing 60 total points. Rosten completed the double-double when she dished out a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Walton tallied 15 points, while Michaela Barnes registered 14 points. Michelle Jahn recorded 10 points.
How It Happened
Edinboro never trailed in the contest until the final minutes, but could never pull away from the Trojans. The Fighting Scots jumped out to an 8-1 lead behind six points from Ciara Rosten, and would lead 17-12 after one quarter.
The Fighting Scots would build the lead to eight points at 28-20 late in the second quarter, but the Trojans closed the half with a 7-2 run to make it 30-27 in a low-scoring first half, with
Shayln Washington draining a three with six seconds left.
Yazmen Hannah's layup to start the third quarter pulled Virginia State to within a point at 30-29, but Edinboro eventually took its biggest lead of the game at 52-42 with just over a minute to play in the period on Walton's layup. Hannah's three with three seconds left cut the margin to 52-45 after three quarters.
Virginia State opened the fourth quarter making 7-of-8 free throws, the last two by Jeane Robinson, to cap a 7-0 run and tie the game at 52-52. The Fighting Scots scored the next five points on a Rosten free throw and a pair of layups by Michaela Barnes to forge ahead, 57-52. Back came the Trojans, scoring the next six points to take their first lead of the night at 58-57 with 4:03 remaining on a pair of free throws by
Chrisanna Green.
Barnes' three-point play gave Edinboro a 60-58 lead, but Hannah answered with a layup to knot the contest at 60-60 with 3:30 to play. Edinboro would hold the Trojans scoreless the rest of the way. Jontay Walton's three-point play gave Edinboro the lead for good at 63-60 with 2:27 to play. Ciara Rosten followed with a layup at 1:46, and after a Virginia State miss, Walton closed out the win with layup with 1:12 remaining.
