Richmond, Va. (November 10, 2018) – Senior
Chrisanna Green led the way for the Trojans securing her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds to help lift the Virginia State University women's basketball team to its first victory over Cheyney 75-48, this afternoon at Barco-Stevens Arena.
Virginia State (1-1) opened the contest outscoring Cheney 28-5 after one quarter and the Trojans continued to outscore the Wolves in the second, 13-12, as Virginia State took a 38-20 lead into the half. Virginia State extended the margin to 57-33 after three periods and rolled to a 75-48 victory to earn its first win of the season.
Green scored 17 points in 33 minutes of play. The Jamestown, New York native was 7-of-15 from the line and finished with a game-high 13rebounds and two blocks.
Shayln Washington recorded a game-high 18 points, six rebounds, one assist and two steals.
Marlon Herring and Shania Stamper led the Wolves in double figures with both contributing 24 total points. Herring led the way for Cheyney when she dished out a game-high 13 points and nine rebounds. Stamper tallied 11 points, while Drazana Vulic registered eight points. Khadijah Pearson recorded seven points.
How It Happened
Virginia State never trailed in the contest opening the game with a strong 25-8 lead over Cheyney to close out the first quarter. The Trojans would build the lead to 18 point-in the second quarter, but the Wolves continued to rally to make it 38-20 to close out the first half.
Chrisanna Green layup to start the third quarter advanced Virginia State lead to 41-20, but Cheyney tried to cut VSU's lead 57-33 with just 00:15 seconds to play in the period on Herring adding two from the free throw line to close out the third quarter.
Virginia State opened the fourth quarter making 3-of-3 free throws, the last two by
Ariel ChiChester to close out the contest. The Trojans scored 18 in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Aja Robertson scored a layup to give the Trojans the edge. Virginia State continued to put up points over the remaining minutes to close out the game giving the Trojans the 75-48 victory. Cheyney added its last basket of the contest with 00:51 seconds left when Jailyn Henry collecting a layup to round out the wolves scoring.
Ariel ChiChester added two from the free throw line to close out the scoring for the Trojans.

> Cheyney University shot 30.8 percent (16-of-52) from the floor and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the free-throw line
