ETTRICK, Va. (November 7, 2018 ) – Junior
Ebony Reynolds scored 11 points and recorded four rebounds to lead Virginia State to a signature win over Newport News Apprentice School (70-56) tonight in an exhibition contest at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
The visiting Builders of Apprentice school started the scoring in the contest with secure the basket at the 8:51 mark to take a 3-0 lead. Apprentice then added one from the free throw line followed by a basket to edge the Trojans 6-0. Virginia State answered at the 7:20 mark when
Autumn Hopson collected two points with a layup. Over the next two minutes the Trojans collected four points to cut the Builders lead 8-6. A three-pointer by
Ebony Reynolds at the 4:45 mark gave the Trojans its first lead 9-8. The Trojans never giving up the lead for the remainder of the game. The Trojans held the Apprentice School (12-34) to 35.29 percent shooting. Fueled by clutch rebounding and aggressive defense, the Trojans answered every Appreciate School run to hang on down the stretch and earn their home win. The Trojans finished the quarter ahead, 16-10. Junior
Ebony Reynolds led the Trojans offensively, shooting 3-for-3 from the three-point line for nine points in the first half.
The Trojans continued to dominate on the court in the second stanza, building their lead to 31-13 by the 6:42 mark. VSU added 11 points in the remaining minutes of the half to take a 19 point advantage into the break, 42-23.
With 2:38 to go in the third, a Hopson basket sparked the Trojans to put them up, 61-32. The Apprentice School Builders netted six points in the final minutes of the quarter, cutting the Trojans lead 61-38 heading into the final period.
The Trojans continued to rally in the final quarter of the game. Virginia State added nine points in the final period while holding Newport New Apprentice School to 18 to win the game, 70-56.
Virginia State shot 41.9 percent from the field, 34.6 percent from behind the arc, 56.3 percent from the free throw line and had three players to score in double figures. Sophomore
Autumn Hopson Reynolds was VSU's second-leading scorer with a game high 11 points and three rebounds, while
Shayln Washington secured 10 points, one rebound, one assist and one steal. Senior
Chrisanna Green contributed 10 rebounds and six points.
The Apprentice School Builders leading scorer was Latrice Washington who finished the contest with 21 points and one total rebound.
Up Next: Virginia State will open its 2018-19 season at the Tip-off Classic on Friday, Nov. 9 – Saturday, Nov. 10 in Richmond, Virginia hosted by Virginia Union University. The Trojans will face Edinboro University on Friday, Nov. 9 with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.
