ETTRICK, Va. (November 29, 2018)– The Virginia State University women's basketball team secured a 52-39 victory over the Lady Panthers of Claflin University this evening at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Senior guard
Chrisanna Green led the way securing another double-double for the Trojans collecting 11 points and 14 rebounds.
Claflin University (CU) opened the contest with a slight 4-0 lead to open the contest. Virginia State then answered with securing a 16-9 lead after one quarter and the Trojans tied with the Lady Panthers in the second, 14 all, as Virginia State took a 30-23 lead into the half. Virginia State extended the margin to 34-31 after three periods and rolled to a 52-39 victory to earn its sixth win of the season.
Green scored 11 points in 40 minutes of play. The Jamestown, New York native was 5-of-9 from the line and finished with 14 rebounds, two assists and one block.
Ebony Reynolds recorded 11 points, eight rebounds and two assists. Followed by
Autumn Hopson who scored nine points.
Ashley Fields led Claflin in double figures scoring contributing 11 total points and four rebounds.
How It Happened
Virginia State trailed in the contest when Claflin opening the game with a 4-0 lead before VSU answered with a 16-9 lead to close out the first quarter. The Trojans would build the lead to seven points-in the second quarter, but the Lady Panthers continued to rally to make it 30-23 to close out the first half.
Chrisanna Green scored the opening basket to start the third quarter advanced Virginia State lead to 32-27, but Claflin never gave up adding points to cut VSU's lead 34-31 with adding one from the free throw line to close out the third quarter.
Virginia State opened the fourth quarter going perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw line,
Ebony Reynolds secured a layup and one from the free throw line to close out the contest. Claflin scored six points in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Virginia State continued to put up points over the remaining minutes to close out the game giving the Trojans the 52-39 victory. Claflin added its last basket of the contest with 00:25 seconds left when Shakarri Mack collected one from the free throw line to round out the Lady Panther scoring.
