HOOPS CENTRAL: #8 Virginia State vs. Claflin University

ETTRICK, Va. (November 28, 2018) – The Virginia State University women's basketball team returns to the court on Thursday, November 29th as they host the Lady Panthers of Claflin University in a non-conference matchup at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.  
 
The Trojans enters the contest (5-2) coming off a 73-58 victory over St. Augustine's University on Tuesday, Nov. 27 at Emery Gymnasium.

Senior Chrisanna Green led the way for the Trojans securing 22 points and five rebounds. The Jamestown, New York native was 8-of-10 from the line and finished with six rebounds. Taylor Hayes recorded 16 points, six rebounds, one assist and one steal.
 
Virginia State opened the game with a 19-15 lead over St. Augustine's to close out the first quarter. The Trojans would build the lead to three point-in the second quarter, but the Lady Falcons continued to rally to make it 52-51 to close out the first half.
 
Yazmen Hannah three-pointer to start the third quarter cut the Lady Falcon's lead 42-38. Taylor Hayes layup then tied the game 45 all. Hayes three-pointer then advanced Virginia State lead to 52-47, but St. Augustine's then cut VSU's lead 52-51 with just 00:16 seconds to play in the period on Angela Caraballo layup to close out the third quarter.
 
The Trojans scored 13 in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Virginia State continued to put up points over the remaining minutes to close out the game giving the Trojans the 73-58 victory. St. Augustine's added its last basket of the contest with 00:28 seconds left when Kiana Clark collecting a three-pointer to round out the Falcons scoring. Chrisanna Green added a layup with 00:38 second left to close out the scoring for the Trojans.
 
Inside the Numbers
> Virginia  State was 24-of-58 (41.4 percent) shooting and 19-of-31 (61.3 percent) from the charity stripe
> St. Augustine's University shot 36.8 percent (21-of-57) from the floor and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free-throw line
> SAU outrebounded the Trojans registering 42 rebounds, while Virginia State recorded 40 rebounds
> Virginia State finished with 19 points off SAU turnovers and 11 second-chance points
> SAU tallied 16 points off VSU turnovers and 12 second-chance points

Claflin University (4-2, 2-0 CIAA) enters the contest coming off 77-75 victory of the Lady Bears of Shaw University on Saturday, November 24th. Deja Dickens led a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Panthers with 17 points.  She also snagged six rebounds to go along with five assists.  Ashley Fields dropped in 16 points with eight rebounds and Dashia Jackson also had a solid performance for Claflin with 15 points (11 in the second half), seven rebounds and five assists.  Long tallied 14 points (12 in the second half) while Shakarri Mack added 10 points to close out the double-digit scorers.

Following the contest, Virginia State will travel to Orangeburg, South Carolina as they open up its 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play as they face the Lady Panthers of Claflin University on Tuesday, December 11th at 5:30 p.m.
