Green Helps Hold Off Paine College, 88-71

ETTRICK, Va. (November 12, 2018) – Senior Chrisanna Green led the way for the Trojans securing her second double-double of the season  with season-high 19  points and 10 rebounds to help lift the Virginia  State University women's basketball team to its second victory over Paine 88-71, tonight at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
 
Virginia  State (2-1) opened the contest outscoring Paine College 28-23 after one quarter and the Trojans continued to outscore the Lions in the second, 22-16, as Virginia State took a 50-39 lead into the half. Virginia State extended the margin to 70-52 after three periods and rolled to a 75-48 victory to earn its second win of the season.

Green scored 19 points in 37 minutes of play. The Jamestown, New York native was 6-of-10 from the line and finished with a 10 rebounds and one steal. Yazmen Hannah recorded a game-high 17 points, three rebounds, three assists and five steals.
 
Tania Ward and Keondra Archie led the Lions in double figures with both contributing 32 total points. Ward led the way for Paine when she dished out a game-high 16 points and four rebounds. Archie tallied 16 points, while Camille Cunningham, Akirah Robinson, Ikela Green and Briona Andrews registered six points each respectively.

How It Happened
Virginia State never trailed in the contest opening the game with a 28-23 lead over Paine College to close out the first quarter. The Trojans would build the lead to 22 point-in the second quarter, but the Lions continued to rally to make it 50-39 to close out the first half.
 
Autumn Hopson layup to start the third quarter advanced Virginia State lead to 52-39, but Paine never gave up adding points to cut VSU's lead 70-52 with just 00:53 seconds to play in the period on Andrews  collecting a three-pointer to close out the third quarter.
 
Virginia State opened the fourth quarter making 9-of-14 free throws, the last two by Jeane' Robinson to close out the contest. The Trojans scored eight in the first six minutes of the fourth quarter. Virginia State continued to put up points over the remaining minutes to close out the game giving the Trojans the 88-71 victory. Paine added its last basket of the contest with 00:00 seconds left when Ikela Green collecting a layup to round out the Lions scoring. Jeane' Robinson added two from the free throw line to close out the scoring for the Trojans.
 
Inside the Numbers
> Virginia  State was 31-of-59 (32.9 percent) shooting and 20-of-34 (67.7 percent) from the charity stripe
> Paine College shot 30.8 percent (25-of-57) from the floor and 71.4 percent (16-of-22) from the free-throw line
> VSU registered 32rebounds, while Paine recorded 37 rebounds
> Virginia State finished with 40 points in the paint, 27 points off Paine turnovers and nine second-chance points
> Paine tallied 12 points in the paint, 19 points off VSU turnovers and eight second-chance points
