Box Score BOWIE, Md. (October 13, 2018) – In front of a Bowie State University Homecoming crowd of 3,653, the Virginia State University Trojans suffered a tough 20-15 loss to the Bulldogs of Bowie State University on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Bowie State improves to the (5-2, 3-1 CIAA, 1-1 Northern Division), while the Trojans moves to (3-3, 3-1 CIAA, 1-1 Northern Division). The Trojans are remaining focused as they keep their eyes on the 2018 CIAA Championship title.
Bowie State took a home field advantage as they took an early 3-0 lead when junior Gene Carson secured a 29-yard field goal at the 3:49 mark in the first. The Bulldogs of Bowie State University held the Trojans scoreless to end the first quarter. The Trojans ended the first quarter with five first downs, 40 passing yards, and going one for three on third-down conversions. Virginia State opened the second quarter receiving a safety at the 12:49 mark, to cut the Bulldogs lead 3-2.
Bowie State then answered with Gene Carson securing a 27-yard field goal to grow its lead over the Trojans, 6-2 to close out the first half. Bowie State started to pick up momentum in the second quarter by adding two touchdowns. The first was at the 10:11 mark, when Amir Hall connected with Montez Clay for a three yard pass for the first touchdown of the contest. BSU then forced its second fumble of the contest. Capitalizing on the error by the Trojans the Bulldogs added another touchdown when Amir Hall connected with Montez Clay for a 22-yard pass for a touchdown at the 5:11 mark. VSU added its first touchdown of the contest on a 11-yard run by quarterback Cordelral Cook (Atlanta, Ga.) to set the score 20-9 in favor of the Bulldogs to end the third quarter.
VSU's Daniel Reid (Chester, Va.) scored on 1-yard run to set the score at 20-15 in favor of the Bulldogs at the 3:00 mark in the fourth quarter. Despite the Bulldogs remaining scoreless in the fourth quarter they secured a 20-15 victory.
The Virginia State Trojans completed the competition with 399 total offense yards compared to 273 for Bowie State. The home team also recorded 171 passing yards, while the Trojans came away with 215. Offensively, the Trojans was led by Cordelral Cook with 215 passing yards, completing 16-of-28 passes. Joshua Harris (King William, Va.) led all receivers with 79 reception yards on six catches. Cordelral Cook carried the ball 17 times for 83 yards and adding one touchdown.
Senior Patrick Prosser (Newport Nes, Va.) led the Trojans defensively with nine tackles and one pass breakup, followed by senior Kurtis Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) with eight tackles.
The Trojans will return home for Homecoming 2018 where they will host the Lions of Lincoln University (PA) on October, October 20. Kickoff slated for 2 pm.
