ETTRICK, VA (October 10, 2018) - The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team defeated the Cavaliers of UVA-Wise in a 3-set (25-19, 25-13, 25-22) sweep for the Trojans "Dig Pink" match in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The non-conference contest moves VSU to a 16-7 overall record, 9-4 in the CIAA; while the UVA Wise Cavs fall to a 4-16 overall record, 1-5 in the Mountain East Conference.
The Trojans did not waste any time pulling away in set 1 with a 7-1 lead. Despite a few VSU errors allowing UVA-Wise to get on the board, the Trojans prevailed with a 25-19 set 1 win.
Set 2 breezed by as VSU took control of the game. Attacking the court with 16 kills in the set, the Trojans were undoubtedly victorious with a 25-13 set 2 win.
UVA-Wise attempted to rally back in set 3, tying the score 7 times. With the score tied 14-14, Tiara Ramey jump started the Trojans momentum with a kill to take the lead and control the set. Although the Cavs played hard, the Trojans worked to extend the scoring gap to take the overall match. The same momentum that jump started VSU's lead gave them their winning point. Ramey delivered the final kill of the night giving VSU the 25-22 set 3 win.
The Trojans collected 39 kills over the Cavs 18; alongside surpassing their visitors in service aces, 4 to 1. VSU worked hard guarding the court defensively with 37 digs to UVA-Wise's 28. The blocking record mimicked the service aces, 4 to 1, in favor of the Trojans.
Controlling the court for the Trojans in kills was sophomore Jailyn Ivey with 11, followed by senior Tiara Ramey with 9 kills and junior Kennedi Cannon with 5 kills. Ivey, along Hailey Heyward and Bria Anderson were evenly match with a single ace respectively. Junior Jasmine Jones, Ivey and Ramey took charge of the Trojans defense with 26 digs combined. Senior Hailey Heyward jumped in and took control of the net, collecting total 4 blocks.
The CIAA Volleyball Championship is quickly approaching with quarterfinals set for November 6 at the top seeds home court and the semifinals and finals on November 9-10 in Salem, VA. The Trojans look to stay focused in hopes of making a championship appearance.
VSU will return to action on Sunday, October 14 for their Trojan Volleyball Tri-Match. The Trojans will host Elizabeth City State University and Felician University for the event in the VSU Multipurpose Center. The match against VSU and ECSU is slated for 11am. Game 2 will feature ECSU and Felician at 1pm followed by VSU and Felician at 3pm.
