Women’s Basketball Defeat Livingstone College, 81-65

ETTRICK, Va. (January 5, 2018) – Junior Chrisanna Green recorded 19 points to lead Virginia State to a 81-65 victory over the Lady Blue Bears of Livingstone College (5-8, 0-3 CIAA) this afternoon at the VSU Multipurpose Center. Green also contributed 16 total rebounds to finish the contest with a double-double performance.


Senior Endia McKinney chipped in a game-high 18 points and one steal, while Keyana Brown recorded 16 points and six rebounds for VSU as they remain undefeated. Mia Fitts  and Alexis Smith finished the contest with 12 points each respectively.
 
Kyala Searcy paced Livingstone College in scoring with 17 points, while Taylor Perkins added 14.
 
After a fast start for the Virginia State, the Trojans (14-0, 4-0 CIAA) ended the game with an 81-65 victory in their second 2018 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association contest. With the victory, VSU improves to a 14-0 record, breaking both the wome's and men's programs undefeated record last set by Coach Harold Deane during the 1975-76 season.
 
Both teams traded baskets over the first quarter, with Endia McKinney leading the charge for VSU with 12 points while shooting 4-of-5 from the three point line. The Trojans held the lead for the entire quarter.
 After holding the Lady Blue Bears to 5-for-17 shooting from the floor, VSU used the remaining minutes to end of the quarter with a 24-13 lead.
 
Virginia State's full-court press proved to have an effect in the early stages of the second quarter, as Livingstone College committed six turnovers in the quarter. Despite an attempt by the Lady Blue Bears to cut the lead (46-29), LC added 16 points in the second. Searcy finished the half with six points to lead the Blue Bears, while Fitts recorded seven points for the Trojans as VSU secured a 46-29 lead at the intermission.

The teams continued to fight down the stretch, as the Trojans continued to add points on the board to close out the quarter, taking a 64-50 lead over the Livingstone College.
Keyana Brown  and Alexis Smith added 11 and four points each in the quarter for VSU. With 00:18 seconds, remaining, Brown converted on a 3-pointer to put the Trojans ahead by 27 points. After going into the fourth quarter leading, the Trojans added 17 points to collect an 81-65 victory. Despite a rally by the Lady Blue Bears they ended the quarter with 15 points.
 
While Virginia State held the overall edge in rebounding (49), Livingstone College was able to come away with a 13-11 advantage on the offensive glass, and scored 34 of their points in the paint. The Trojans did hold the Lady Blue Bears to 32 percent shooting for the game, with Smith recorded three steals to help anchor the defense.
