#23 Virginia State Dominate the Lady Bears of Shaw University, 64-47

RALEIGH, N.C. (January 31, 2018) – The 23rd-ranked Virginia State University Women's Basketball team dominated the Lady Bears of Shaw University, 64-47, tonight at the C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium.

INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
Senior Alexis Smith led the Trojans with 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and six steals in her 38 minutes played. Junior Chrisanna Green continued to clean up the glass with nine rebounds and eight points. Senior Dionna Marcus finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, and three steals.

 
Senior Mia Fitts chipped in with eight points, while senior Keyana Brown finished with seven points. 
 

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
Virginia State started the contest with a 6-0 lead. Alexis Smith secured the opening basket for the Trojans at the 8:26 mark. Virginia State pushed the lead to 10-2 nailing back-to-back baskets. 
A three pointer by Keyana Brown helped the Trojans grow its lead 15-7.  Virginia State then added three more points to end the quarter with an 18-11 advantage. Never turning over the lead the entire contest.
 

Second Quarter:
Senior Alexis Smith secured the first basket to edge the Trojans 25-18.  Junior Aja Robertson knocked down a three-pointer and a basket midway through the quarter to keep adding points to board and advancing the Trojans lead, 32-21.
 
VSU then added a layup by Chrisanna Green to take a 13-point lead, 34-21, with 1:07 left in the half. Shaw added one from the free throw line but the Trojans took a 34-21 lead into the locker room.
 

Third Quarter:
Alexis Smith secured a layup followed by a jumper to add five points for the Trojans making the score 38-30. Virginia State then added eight points to grow its lead, 46-38, edging the Lady Bears. Dionna Marcus secured the final basket for the Trojans with a 46-39 advantage heading into the final stanza.
 

Fourth Quarter:
The Trojans continued to add points to the board in final quarter as Mia Fitts collected a shot from behind the arc. VSU then netted a basket and added two from the free throw line to take a 61-41 lead over the Lady Bears. 
 
Ebony Reynold's three pointer helped the Trojans secure a 64-47 victory.

Virginia State shot 40 percent from the field, 23.1 percent from behind the arc, 42.9 percent from the free throw line and had two players to score in double figures.

The Lady Bears leading scorer was Lerven Johnson-Tyler who finished the contest with 14 points, six total rebounds, one assist and one steal.

UP NEXT
Virginia State will travel to Lincoln University, Pa. for a Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Northern division match-up against Lincoln University on February 3 at Manuel Rivero Hall. Tip-off is slated for 2 p.m.
