#25 Virginia State Holds Off Bowie State’s Bulldogs 67-59

Box Score ETTRICK, Va. (January 27, 2018) – The 25th-ranked Virginia State University (VSU) women's Basketball team defeated the Bulldogs of Bowie State University (BSU) 67-59 at the VSU Multipurpose Center this afternoon.

Alexis Smith led the Trojans with 16 points, five assists, three rebounds, one block and one steal. Keyana Brown finished with 15 points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Mia Fitts chipped in with 13 points. Chrisanna Green finished with a double-double performance contributing 13 points and 10 rebounds. Dionna Marcus chipped in with six points
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter:
BSU started the contest with a 3-0 lead. Alexis Smith secured the opening basket for the Trojans at the 8:56 mark to take the edge over the Bulldogs. BSU answered with tying the game 3-all at the 7:39 mark. The Bulldogs then pushed the lead to 10-5 by the 4:59 mark. With 2:33 left in the quarter, a three-pointer by Alexis Smith made the score 14-8, cutting BSU's lead. Two free throws by Dionna Marcus helped the Trojans cut the Bulldogs lead, 16-10, to end the quarter.
 
Second Quarter:
Alexis Smith secured back-to-back three pointers to cut BSU's lead 18-16 at the 9:11 mark.  A three pointer by Keyana Brown helped the Trojans tie the game at 22-all. Both teams would go back and forth for the lead, with the Bulldogs securing a 31-28 lead with 00:42 second left in the quarter. The Trojans added its final point of the quarter from the free throw line, trailing the Bulldogs 35-29 heading in the locker room.
 
Third & Fourth Quarter:
The Trojans would not go away quietly, closing the deficit to 54-51 by the 7:22 mark of the fourth quarter, following a pair of free throws by Dionna Marcus (Fort Stewart, Ga.). Virginia State battled back to take its first lead (55-54) since (3-0) at the 4:26 mark of the first quarter via an Alexis Smith (Lusby, Md.) layup.
Virginia State led 61-55, but a free throw by Chatman, followed by a 3-pointer by senior Ty-Nita Baker pulls the Bulldogs within two at 61-59 with 34.7 seconds remaining in regulation.
 
VSU's Keyanna Brown (Williamsburg, Va.) knocked down a pair of free throws for a little breathing room at 63-59 while Chrisanna Green (Jamestown, N.Y.) hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.
  
 
UP NEXT
VSU will travel to Raleigh, N.C. to face the Lady Bears of Shaw University on January 31 at C.C. Spaulding Gymnasium. Tip-off is slated for 6 p.m.
