Box Score 2 ETTRICK, VA- The Virginia State University Trojan volleyball team wrapped up day 1 of the 2017 CIAA Round Up. As the host institution, the VSU finished the day with a 0-2 record after taking on the Rams of Winston-Salem State University and Bears of Shaw University.
The Trojan put up a fight in game one, but fell to the WSSU Rams with a final score of 3-1.
In set one, WSSU took an early lead to take the 25-17 win.
Although the Trojans trailed for majority of set two, several errors by the Rams gave VSU the 25-23 win.
VSU was not able to take control of the remainder of the set with a final score of 25-19 and 25-17.
Leading VSU on the court was rookie Jailyn Ivey with nine kills. Junior Hailey Heyward was not too far behind with eight kills while sophomore Kennedi Cannon tallied seven kills.
Rounding out the night, the Trojans faced the Shaw Bear in 5 sets. The Trojans fought hard, but could not pull through with a win.
Taking control of set one, VSU snatched a 25-19 victory. Set two was a battle for the Trojans after tying the score 10 times. Coming out victorious with a 26-24 win, VSU took set two.
Shaw rallied back in set three with a score of 25-20 and 25-12 in set four.
The determining set was intense as both teams battled for the win. Despite the Trojans taking and early lead, the Bear came back to take the 15-10 set and the game.
Kennedi Cannon grasped 13 kills while Hailey Heyward tallies 11 kills. Jailyn Ivey also took control of the court for VSU with 10 kills. Rookie Victoria Holman collected four aces while Heyward jumped up for seven blocks.
VSU will round out the CIAA Round Up on Sunday, Oct. 1 with a 1pm matchup against The Falcons of St. Augustine's University.
