Box Score BOWIE, MD (September 21, 2017)- The VSU Trojan volleyball team grasped a three set victory over the Bulldogs of Bowie State University (25-10, 25-19 and 25-13) during their Thursday night match up.
After familiarizing themselves with the Bulldogs court during the CIAA Round Up on September 16-17, the Trojans held BSU under 20 points in each set.
Working the court, VSU took an early lead in the set one with a score of 12-2. Despite BSU adding a few points to the scoreboard, their consecutive errors gave the Trojans a set 1 victory of 25-10.
Set two was a close matchup in the beginning as both teams looked to be equally matched. The Bulldogs attempted to rally back with a slight lead, but a kill by rookie Jailyn Ivey and sophomore Terrinae White, shifted the Trojans game into high gear. After regaining control, VSU secured the 25-19 set two win.
Going point for point in the first half of set three, the score was tied 11-11. Multiple kills from the Trojans and errors from the Bulldogs, ruled set three in favor of VSU with a score of 25-13.
Rookie Jailyn Ivey remains consistent on the court for the Trojans after leading them with 6 kills for the night. Sophomore Kennedi Cannon, senior Miranda Bass and Ivey each secured 2 aces during the contest. Bass stepped in with 15 assists, while junior Hailey Heyward tallied 3 blocks.
The win over BSU moves the Trojans to a 2-10 overall record, 2-2 in the CIAA conference.
On Monday, September 25, VSU will host their I-95 rivals, the Panthers of Virginia Union University. The matchup is slated for 6pm at the VSU Multipurpose Center.
