Volleyball Wraps Up Opening Weekend Invite

Ettrick, VA- The Virginia State University volleyball hosted their annual VSU Opening Weekend Invite on September 1-2, 2017 at the VSU Multipurpose Center.

Under the leadership of first year head coach Amanda Walker, the Trojans took on several tough opponents. After 4 matches, VSU holds a 0-4 overall record.

Opening the invite, the Trojans fought hard in game 1 with a 5 set match against Union University (TN). After battling back and forth in sets 1-4, set 5 extended past the intended 15 points. Keeping the score close, the Trojans fell short in set 5 with score of 27-25.

Rounding out day 1, VSU worked the court in their match up against Alderson Broaddus University. Set 1 ruled in favor of the Trojans with a score of 25-21. The scoring gap remained close for remaining 4 sets, but ABU took charge for the 3-1 overall win. Before a minor injury sat key player junior Tiara Ramey out for the remainder of the tournament, she lead the Trojans with 12 kills over Alderson Broaddus.

The Trojans were not able to gain control of their match against Seton Hill University to open day 2 of the invite. VSU fell short after 3 sets with a back to back score of 25-18.

Wrapping up the Opening Weekend Invite, VSU faced the Cavilers of UVA-Wise. The Trojans took the first set with a score of 25-18. The Cavilers kicked their game into high gear during set 2. Junior Hailey Heywood gave a good spike, tying set 2, 20-20. A few minor mistakes by the Trojans cost them set 2 with a score of 25-23. VSU had a slow run in set 3 with a score of 25-14. Going into set 4, VSU worked to rally back but fell short, 25-19.

VSU will return to action on September 8-9 as they travel to participate in the Shepherd University's Volleyball Tournament. The Trojans will face Lock Haven and Alderson Broaddus on September 8 and take on Ursuline and Shepherd on September 9.
