Box Score BOWIE, MD (September 17, 2017)- The Virginia State University Trojan Volleyball team wrapped up the first Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Round Up of the 2017 season by taking on the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University.
Keeping the scoring gap close, the Trojans powered through four sets against JCSU, but fell short with a final score of 3-1.
VSU dominated the court in set one with a score of 25-22. Despite the Golden Bulls taking an early lead, the Trojans stayed consistent and jumped ahead at the right moment. Securing five consecutive points, the score was 24-17, in favor of VSU. JCSU managed to grasp a few extra points, but an error on the Golden Bulls gave VSU their set winning point.
The Trojans held a steady lead for majority of set two, but the JCSU stepped up to take the set win with a score of 25-23.
Despite VSU falling short in set three with a score of 28-26, the battle for the win was intense. Several errors on both teams gave them each their starting four points of the set. The Trojans picked up momentum to take a 20-13 lead. JCSU was able to rally back off of VSU errors, tying the set 24-24. Going point for point, VSU was not able to take the two point lead to win the set.
Set four mimicked set two, as the Golden Bulls snatched the lead from the Trojans with a final score of 25-21.
The Trojans have a 1-10 overall record, 1-2 in the CIAA, as they move forward into conference play.
VSU will travel back up to Bowie, MD on September 21, this time to take on the Bulldogs of Bowie State University. The first serve is slated for 6pm.
