Box Score 2 BOWIE, MD (September 16, 2017) - The Virginia State University Trojans volleyball team began their conference play with a 1- 1 record on day 1 of the CIAA Round Up, hosted by Bowie State University.
In their first matchup of the day, VSU secured their first win of the season by sweeping the Blue Bears of Livingstone College, 3-0.
Keeping the Blue Bears under 20 points, the Trojans took set 1 with a score of 25-15. Livingstone did not put up a fight in set 2, giving VSU the 25-17 win. Set 3 mimicked set 1, ruling in favor of the Trojans, 25-15.
Rookie Jailyn Ivey led the Trojans with 16 kills and 25 attacks over the Blue Bears while senior Miranda Bass collected 31 assists.
VSU rallied hard in their last contest of the day against the Broncos of Fayetteville State University. The Trojans fell short in set 1 with a close score of 25-23. Adding a little more momentum to their game, VSU took set 2 with a final score of 25-22 and set 3 with a score of 25-19. Although the Trojans closed the scoring gap, they lost the final 2 sets with a score of 25- 21 and 15-12.
Ivey stayed consistent by leading the team with 17 kills. Junior Miya Jones and sophomore Kennedi Cannon were evenly matched with 14 kills each. Bass stepped in to tally 56 assists.
The Trojans currently hold a 1-9 overall record, 1-1 in the conference. For the final day of the CIAA Round Up, VSU will face Johnson C. Smith University on September 16Â at 1pm on the campus of Bowie State University.
