Box Score ETTRICK, VA (May 4, 2017) – The Virginia State University baseball team suffered a tough (15-7) loss to the Hawks of Chowan University in its opening round of the 2017 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association baseball championship at Whaley Colbert Field this afternoon.
The Trojans jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, with sophomore
Sisqo Scott (Hampton, VA) coming across home plate adding VSU's first run. Followed by senior
Colton Gunn (Dinwiddie, VA) homerun which scored
Jahleel Sewer.
Chowan answered in the bottom of the first inning with plating two runs. VSU kept the same momentum in the next two inning with senior
Jahleel Sewer (Hampton, VA) securing a homerun which scored Taylor. Followed by freshman
Delmacus Talley (Virginia Beach, VA) single bringing
Julian White (Yorktown, VA) home, making the score 6-2.The Hawks of Chowan continued to rally as they added five runs the next three innings taking their first lead of the game. The game remained in the Hawks favor with Chowan adding seven runs in the seventh inning. VSU added its final run of the game in the eighth inning. The Hawks also added its final run of the game to secure the 15-7 victory.
Starting off on the mound for VSU was junior
Jamar Hinton (Dinwiddie, VA) who allowed 19 hits, 11 runs, one walks and three strikeouts in the six innings pitched. Followed by junior
Brandon Diamond (Chesterfield, VA) who wrapped things up for the Trojans allowing five hits, four runs, three walks, and one strikeout in the two innings pitched.
With the loss, the Trojans (19-25) will look to regroup as they prepare to face the Falcons of St. Augustine's on May 5
th with first pitch time to be determined.
